New Life to Old Ideas!

Long long ago...in a galaxy far far away...(just kidding)...but waaaaay back in 2001, I found a greeting card among my hoard of art clippings from newspapers and magazines. On it was a pretty painting called "Baba and Billy" (The artist's younger daughter, Vivian) from 1920 by Scottish artist John Duncan (1866-1945).

"Baba and Billy" (The artist's younger daughter, Vivian) - John Duncan (1866-1945).
Well, this little beauty inspired me that year to paint my own version as a sort of practice with soft pastels.

Little Redhead & Cat (2001)

To personalize my version of the painting a bit more, I changed the black cat (as seen in the original painting) for my sweet black and white fur baby at the time, "Boeta".

"Little Redhead & Cat" has been my favorite piece ever since then, even though it technically isn't 100% original, being a sort of copy and all.

Some years after that, I had a desire to make an artwork in the same style and the idea came to me to update Little Redhead & Cat and paint the little girl as a young woman all grown up. But I kinda lost my mojo, if you will, 'cause it didn't turn out so good.

I was so disappointed about my failure that I filed the attempt away with the rest of the castaways in the back of a cupboard, because I just couldn't look at it. It stayed there, hidden from my sight...for a decade.

Then last year I started sorting through all my old art & drawings in order to document them (by photographing or scanning each one) before chucking most of them. The main goal being to get rid of the old to make space for the new. Declutter and simplify and all that. It sounds simple, but if you have a bit of a hoarder in you, it's easier said than done. Going through each item just ignited the desire to revive those old failed ideas. I thought to myself: "Well, I've grown as an artist since the time I worked on those ideas, maybe I have it in me now to actually make something out of them, or at least finish the unfinished, which would feel like an accomplishment in itself."

So coming upon my failed attempt of a grown-up version of the little redhead, I tackled it as a test. I had nothing to loose, if I failed again it would just make it easier to get rid of the thing. But if it worked out, boy would I be pleased!

And I am glad to report...I am well pleased with the grown-up version of the little redhead. Everything came together this time. The old idea had a bit of a rest and at the right time was brought back to glorious life! (A bit melodramatic...but anyway...)

"Pure Bride" (2015)

Let me tell you, I had a lot of fun doing this and can't wait to give new life to a few of the other "failures" waiting in the wings.

Character Sketch

"Magdelize" - Mixed Media on Canvas, commissioned by Annalize Burger (all the way from Namibia) as a character sketch.

I met Annalize on an art group on FB, Kom Ons Skilder, and she asked me to do a little experiment with her after seeing the painting "Rosie" that I shared. The experiment would be this: she would give me a character description and I would use it to paint a portrait of that character. I did figure out that it was a description of her beautiful young daughter, but she didn't want a portrait of the real Magdelize. She wanted me to stick to our experiment. Her description of the character "Magdelize" was very detailed and made the job of painting her not overly difficult. The result is a picture of a strong young woman, looking to the future with determination, standing on a solid foundation of faith, family, patriotism & tradition and showing her deep love for the land she was raised on and the animals she cares for. I'm proud of this one...it will be inspiring future paintings.

Mixed Media Painting - Always A Rough Start

I love Mixed Media art! I'd like to think that this way of making art has freed me from my perfectionistic tendencies and given me the gift of freely expressing myself through my art. Maybe not entirely though...

Although some pressure to work precisely has been lifted from my hunched over shoulders as I snip and tear and glue and paint away, there is always that moment when I stop...really look...and think - what is this mess in front of me? Blessedly those feelings of inadequacy and thoughts of "I really don't know what I'm doing right now", does eventually go away....

...as long as something worthy of being called art starts to emerge on the canvas...

...and I can look at what I've done and know the struggle to get there was worth it.

"Rosie" - 8 x 8 inch Mixed Media painting on Canvas

Like a butterfly struggling to get free from her cocoon, "Rosie" did eventually emerge from the rough beginnings of torn paper and pen scribbles, all pretty in pink at that!

There is beauty in imperfection. Our Creator looks past the obvious flaws in us, His creation, and our rough beginnings, and still loves us and sees our great potential. According to Him we were fearfully and wonderfully made.

"You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit them together in my mother’s womb.  Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvelous—and how well I know it. You were there while I was being formed in utter seclusion!  You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breathe. Every day was recorded in your book!"

Photo A Day Challenge - Day 15 & 16

Day 15: An Ordinary Moment

A familiar sight around our house,
my little Daisy cat on the bed against the pillows (atishoo!!)
...she fell asleep during the (N)ieews:)

I received some lovely comments
on Fat Mum Slim's Facebook page about this one...
"So dreamy" & "Gorgeous cat".

Day 16: Two Things

My vintage copy of "Pride & Prejudice"
& my little mp3 player...something old & something new.

This copy of Pride & Prejudice is very special to me.
There is an inscription in the front:
my grandfather's signature; the date: 1943; & the place: Johannesburg.
It also contains some lovely illustrations inside by C.E. Brock.

 Charles Edmund Brock (5 February 1870 – 28 February 1938)
was a widely published English line artist and book illustrator,
who signed his work C. E. Brock.
He was a very successful illustrator of the books of authors such as
Jonathan Swift, William Thackeray, Jane Austen, and George Eliot.

Well that's that for today...I'm still working on getting my office/studio
ready for the new year. Sorting papers and throwing stuff out...
...purging so to speak.
I didn't have a worktable in here, just a desk
(which is always cluttered)
but now I have a desk and a worktable!!
The only problem is...3m x 3m rooms can only contain
that many pieces of furniture and art & craft supplies.
So there is major reshuffling of "stuff" going on.

Photo A Day Challenge - Day 14: Something Yellow

YELLOW vintage 1970's porcelain & crochet doily with beads...
I have never been much of a fan of the colour yellow,
(maybe because of the 'plastic' misuse of it during the 1980's).
That's until recently,
NOW I can't get enough of it.

You see...it's possible to change your mind:)

These lovelies have been in my family forever...
it just makes me want to smile:)

Now let me share what Google found for me,
here's hoping it makes your Monday more bearable.

The 'Pièce de résistance'...
a painting I did late last November called:

"Covered by Grace"

Photo A Day Challenge - Day 12 & 13

Day 12: Surprise

I was SURPRISED...
at how I struggled to find something surprising for yesterday's challenge,
but happily Jane Austen's "Emma" came to my rescue...

Day 13: Circle

CIRCLE of lights...string lights aren't just for Christmas:)

Thinking about, planning for and doing this challenge is...

TAKING OVER MY LIFE!!

But I absolutely LOVE it.

It's helping me to be creative everyday and to think...

"OUT OF THE BOX".

Plus I've discovered Picasa (find it here),
Google's freeware image organizer and image viewer
for organizing and editing digital photos.
I've been having so much fun playing with it,
editing my photographs and changing them from drab to fab...
What my little Sony Cybershot can't do,
(but what I had in my mind while taking the pictures),
Picasa accomplishes for me.

Tomorrow's prompt is "YELLOW".

I can't wait!

Photo A Day Challenge - Day 11: Water

Ethereal WATER droplets on pink flower petals.

Amazing what you can do on a cloudy day

armed with a hose and your camera:)

 Have a special Friday!

Photo A Day Challenge - Day 10: One O'clock

The stars were out at one o'clock this morning...

...time for sleeping soundly...

I'm sooooo glad I chose one in the MORNING.
We're in the middle of a heatwave
and I didn't have to go traipsing about during the day
looking for photo opportunities for this challenge.
It's actually two photographs I layered on-top of each other,
one of me (pretending) to sleep soundly
and the other of the night sky view from my bedroom window.

Something to think about:

Hope your day was joyful!

Photo A Day Challenge - Day 9: Paper

PAPER BOATS...

...always wanted to float a boat...

...these were fun to make...

... and then even funner to race on our bird bath.

Made me feel like a kid!

They're drying out so I can play again later...:)

Photo A Day Challenge - Day 8: Something beginning with 'T'

Something beginning with 'T'...
"TEA TIME"
...I took my cup of Rooibos tea for a little outing in the garden this morning...
...it was quite...
 ..."TRANQUIL".

 Goodnight everyone...

Photo A Day Challenge - Day 7: Street

...on the street where I live...

It's hot and sticky before 7:30 in the morning.

Hoping to get to some painting or other creating today. This photo challenge has at least got me blogging every day, but I need to get started with producing some new art and jewelry.

Have a great Monday everybody!
